Introduction
The Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL) was established in 2005 following a merger of Leeds Grammar School and Leeds Girls’ High School. It is a co-educational independent school located across two sites. The senior school and junior school are situated at Alwoodley, while the Headingley site is used by the infant school and nursery.
The school educates students aged between 11 and 16. Classes are segregated by gender but extracurricular activities are mixed. Junior school and sixth form classes are coeducational.

How to Apply for 11 Plus Entry to The Grammar School at Leeds
Parents who want to register their child for Year 7 entry are encouraged to attend one of the school open events that run throughout the school year. Parents and students will be shown around by current pupils and will have the opportunity to ask staff questions. GSAL hosts an annual showcase open morning in October that includes musical ensembles, sports matches and house activities. The school recommends attending both events to get a true picture of the environment.
The Grammar School at Leeds provides financial support for academically talented children from low income backgrounds through means-tested bursaries. The school does not make financial awards solely on the basis of academic, musical or sporting merit. Instead, it seeks to direct bursary funds to those families most in need, to allow their child to fulfill his/her academic potential.

The Grammar School at Leeds 11 Plus Pretest Assessment
Those applying for a bursary Year 7 place at The Grammar School at Leeds are required to sit both a bursary exam and an entrance exam.
Bursary Exam
This usually takes place in November in the form of the ISEB Common Pretest. It’s an online test that aims to provide schools with an overview of a pupil’s academic potential in the core subjects of Maths, English, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning.
The results of this examination will be used to create pupil rankings, and the highest performing pupils will be invited to continue with their bursary applications and attend the main entrance examination in January.
Entrance Exam
This usually takes place in January and consists of one maths papers and two English papers in comprehension and creative writing.
At the next stage, all Year 7 applicants will be interviewed and a report from the pupil’s current school will be required. The school report provides an overview of the child’s academic achievement, behaviour, and wider contribution in their previous school.
Bursary pupils are subject to a home visit following the interview, where parents or guardians will be asked to provide original documentary evidence to support the information provided within their child’s bursary application. On the receipt of a satisfactory report from the home visit, the school will issue a bursary offer.
The Grammar School at Leeds Admissions Criteria (Bursary Only)
The Grammar School at Leeds supports 170 pupils per year through bursaries. Admission is determined by a pretest assessment and a short interview. Bursaries are awarded to families whose net assets are less than £60k per annum, which takes into account household income and savings.
A bursary application will only be successful if these two criteria are met:
– The child is of exceptional academic ability as demonstrated by their performance in the bursary and entrance exams
– It is proven that the family is in financial need
