How to Apply for 13 Plus Entry to Bradfield College

Before submitting an application for 13 Plus entry to Bradfield College, students and parents are invited to attend an introductory tour of the school, which takes place on most Saturdays during term time. The tours offer parents and prospective students the opportunity to see the school grounds and learn more about the teaching, facilities and activities on offer.

Places on these tours are limited so that parents and students can enjoy an individual tour with a current Bedford school student before having lunch with the Headmaster.

In order to proceed with an application to the school, students are required to complete a Provisional Entry Form and return it to the school Admissions Office. Forms can be obtained by emailing the office at [email protected], or by calling 0118 964 4500.

Successful applicants will be asked to attend an admissions interview, which usually takes place during the summer term. Before the interview, the college will request a detailed report from the student’s current school and this will have an influence on final placings.

The interview lasts around 30 minutes and aims to assess how the student will fit in at the school. The interview equally aims to determine if the school is able to effectively meet the needs of the student. Students are required to bring an example of their academic work with them to the interview, which will act as a talking point. Students will also be asked about their interests outside of school and any extra-curricular activities that they’re involved in.

Additionally, students are also required to attend a 20-30 minute interview with their housemaster or housemistress.

The Bradfield College 13 Plus Pretest Assessment

Before a place can be offered, all candidates need to sit the ISEB Common Pre-Test Exam in October, in addition to the admissions interview. The Common Pretest is designed to provide schools with an overview of a pupil’s academic potential over several core subjects including English, Maths, Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning. The ISEB pretest is computer-based and completed online. The test can only be taken once and is age-standardised to make sure that no candidate has an advantage over any other based on their age.

Bradfield College Admissions Criteria

In order to apply for a school place in Year 9, students need to pass either the ISEB exam, the Common Academic Scholarship, Bradfield’s College Scholarship, the Prep School Baccalaureate, or Bradfield’s Entrance Examination. The college also requires a Headmaster or mistress’ reference for the pupil.

Students who provide an Educational Psychologist’s Report will also be considered for entry, assuming that the school can enable them access to the full curriculum.

School allocations are based on the student’s performance in the pretest, the admissions interview and the housemaster or mistress’ interview. The report from the pupil’s current school will also be considered. Pupils are required to select a first choice House in which to be part of. If there’s a place available at the student’s preferred house, then a place will be allocated. If spaces aren’t available, students will be offered a Central Place and will be invited to visit more houses during the summer term.

Bradfield College also offers 13+ entry through various scholarships for pupils who excel in specific subjects.

How to Prepare for the Bradfield College Pretest

Bradfield College uses the ISEB Common Entrance pretest for 13 Plus entry. At Pretest Plus, we specialise in helping students prepare for independent school entry tests through our online pretest practice tests and courses.

There are several benefits to using our resources, including helping your child get acquainted with the exam style and layout, as well as improving time management. Our practice tests and courses can also help you identify your child’s strengths and weaknesses and better focus their study.

The online tests consist of four timed sections that cover Maths, English, Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning. They allow your child to review their answers and read detailed explanations for each question. This feedback is essential in helping them focus their efforts in the lead up to the exam, as they’ll be able to allocate more time to any areas that they need to improve in. Information on statistical averages is also provided.
