The Cognitive Abilities Test (CAT) in Malaysia: How it’s Used and How to Prepare
Table of Contents
Introduction
It’s reported that the Cognitive Abilities Test is used in over 100 countries worldwide. In Malaysia, the test is used by many international schools as a means of providing a standardised indication of a child’s attainment. The results from the CAT are then used to help the schools identify the most appropriate teaching approach for each individual student.
Cognitive Abilities Tests are used to identify a student’s academic potential. Rather than focusing on a child’s ‘learned knowledge’, the tests are designed specifically to assess developed abilities that haven’t necessarily been previously assessed.
Typically, the CAT4 could be used a way of deciding which class a student should be placed in. It also provides schools with an indication of a child’s learning needs, to help them allocate the most effective teaching resources.
One of the biggest benefits of CAT4 is that it can help schools identify students with dyslexia, and other additional support needs.
CATs generally assess pupils in four areas:
– Verbal reasoning
– Non-verbal reasoning
– Quantitative reasoning
– Spatial reasoning
The Cognitive Abilities Test (CAT4) in Malaysia
Cognitive Abilities Tests are administered in Malaysia by the Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA), a Malaysian Government agency, to provide benchmarking assessments that could be used to support schools and students who attend a Maktab Rendah Sains boarding school. The CAT is used in several ways in Malaysia, including:
– As an entrance test for entry to international schools
– As a way of predicting KS3 & KS4 results
– As a means of supporting education targets
– As a way of monitoring pupil progress throughout the academic year
– Staff appraisal
The data gathered from the tests allow Malaysian schools to personalise their teaching to suit the needs of individual students. It also providers schools with a standardised set of data to compare Malaysian students’ abilities with those from the UK and elsewhere in the world.
