CAT4: Nine Key Things You Need to Know

Introduction

In this article, we will reveal the nine key facts you need to know about the CAT4 Assessment. These cover how the test works, what’s included and tips to help your child maximise their scores.

Nine Key Things to Know About the CAT4 Assessment

1. There are different versions of the CAT4 test, depending on your child’s age. These are as follows:

CAT4 Level X – for students in UK Year 2 or US/international Grade 1

CAT4 Level Y – for students in UK Year 3 or US/international Grade 2

CAT4 Level A – for students in UK Year 4 or US/international Grade 3

CAT4 Level B – for students in UK Year 5 or US/international Grade 4

CAT4 Level C – for students in UK Year 6 or US/international Grade 5

CAT4 Level D – for students in UK Year 7 or US/international Grade 6

CAT4 Level E – for students in UK Year 8 or US/international Grade 7

CAT4 Level F – for students in UK Year 9 or 10 or US/international Grade 8 or 9

CAT4 Level G – for students in UK Year 11 or 12 or US/international Grade 10 or 11

At the end of this article, you can view a list of specific CAT4 practice tests for each of these levels.

2. The CAT4 test is divided into 8 modules. These vary in length. The shortest modules are 8 minutes long and the longest modules are 10 minutes long. The 8 modules are split across 4 types of Reasoning: Verbal, Non-Verbal, Spatial and Quantitative. Each of these is equally weighted when calculating your child’s final score.

3. The CAT4 test is a Cognitive Abilities Test (CAT) created by a company called GL Assessment. It’s called the CAT4 as it’s the fourth version of their CAT test. The test is multiple-choice. There are 5 answer choices to choose from for each question. There is one correct answer per question.

4. The Verbal Reasoning modules are called Verbal Classification and Verbal Analogies. Verbal Classification involves selecting the answer choice that best goes with three target words. Verbal Analogies involves completing a pair of word analogies.

5. The Non-Verbal Reasoning modules are called Figure Classification and Figure Matrices. Figure Classification involves selecting the image that best goes with three target images. Figure Matrices involves selecting the best answer choice to complete a 2×2 or 3×3 grid.

6. The Spatial Reasoning modules are called Figure Analysis and Figure Recognition. Figure Analysis involves understanding how holes are displayed in folded and unfolded paper. Figure Recognition involves locating a hidden target shape within the answer choices.

7. The Quantitative Reasoning modules are called Number Series and Number Analogies. Number Series involves completing sequences. Number Analogies involves completing a third pair of number analogies.

8. The CAT4 assessment is not adaptive. This means there is no negative marking so you should encourage your child to answer every question. If they find themselves out of time in a module with a few questions to spare, it’s better that they guess and supply an answer for each question rather than leave the last few blank.

9. Most children find one or two of the four types of Reasoning harder than the others. That’s why we recommend taking the first of our CAT4 Practice Tests at the correct level as a diagnostic. A full list of levels can be found below.

You will be able to see which types of questions your child finds tricky so you can then focus specifically on them. For example, if your child takes the first practice test and scores below average in one of the two Spatial modules, you can use our CAT4 Spatial Reasoning Course to quickly get up to speed before trying a second practice test.

This is an extremely efficient and effective way to prepare for the CAT4 assessment as the test follows a predictable pattern. Therefore, our courses cover pretty much every possible question variation that could come up in the actual exam.

This means your child will be fully prepared and there will be no surprises in the actual exam. They will be able to approach the assessment with confidence.
