How to Apply for 13 Plus Entry to Wellington College

To be considered for a 13 Plus place at Wellington College, parents or guardians must register their child by late June of Year 5. Details for late registration can be found here.

If you have any questions about the admissions process or the registration form, contact the college’s admissions team on 01344 444 013 or email [email protected].

The Wellington College 13 Plus Pretest Assessment

After registration is complete, candidates are required to sit the ISEB Common Pretest Exam, which usually takes place in October or November of Year 6. Designed to provide schools with an overview of a pupil’s academic potential, the Common Pretest focuses on four core subjects: English, Mathematics, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning. The one-off test is usually taken at a pupil’s current school and is age-standardised to ensure that no candidate has an advantage over any other based on their age.

Wellington College Admissions Criteria

Wellington College candidates at the 13 Plus stage are required to pass the ISEB pretest exam. Selected pupils make the long-list and will then be asked to attend an assessment day at the College in Lent Term of Year 6, which includes a series of problem-solving tasks and an admissions interview for a senior member of staff. The College will also request references from the pupil’s current school.

Conditional offers are made in March of Year 6, subject to performance in Year 8 examinations. For 2021 entry onwards, Wellington College, alongside St. Paul’s and Westminster, will no longer require students to sit Common Entrance as part of the application process.

70% of offers are made at this stage (to those who were registered by June 30 of Year 5). There are two Late Admissions routes available as well. Click here to view the timelines.

How to Prepare for the Wellington College Pretest

Wellington College uses the ISEB Common Entrance pretest for 13 Plus entry. Preparing for examinations can be an overwhelming experience for some children and it’s important to limit any potential stress by ensuring that they know what to expect from the assessment. Our online practice tests and courses help students gain experience in taking pretests and can help identify their strengths and weaknesses.

If your child is preparing for Wellington College’s 13 Plus pretest, our resources can help with their preparation. Made up of four sections, the tests cover the subjects your child will be tested on in the exam itself – English, Maths, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning. Once a test has finished, both you and your child will have the chance to review answers and read explanations of each question. The results also show information on statistical averages so you can see how your child’s performance compares to others.
