Marlborough College 13 Plus (13+) Pretest Practice Tests (and Courses)

Introduction

Situated in the Wiltshire market town of Marlborough, the College was first established in 1843 as an independent boys’ school. Today, it’s a co-educational facility with over 870 pupils. While maintaining its established traditions, this Church of England school is progressive in its nature. Insistent on high academic standards, it nonetheless supports artistic and sporting achievements.

One of the most expensive independent schools in the UK, Marlborough College prides itself on being both internationally and socially inclusive.

How to Apply for 13 Plus Entry to Marlborough College

Before submitting an application for 13 Plus entry to Marlborough College, families are encouraged to attend one of its open day events, according to the child’s year of entry. Individual visits can be arranged if open day dates aren’t suitable.

Following the College visit, parents can register their child up to four years prior to entry. Simply contact the College’s Admissions Department on +44 (0)1672 892 300 to request a registration form. A non-refundable registration fee of £250 is also required. Marlborough is a popular UK independent school and competition for places is fierce. Parents are advised to apply for a Year 9 place well in advance of their child’s need to attend. Please refer to the full admissions details on the College website.

Registered pupils and their parents will be asked to attend a House Visit and parents will be asked to complete an enrolment form 22 months prior to entry date. At this stage, a report from the child’s current Headteacher will be required and parents can state their boarding house preference.

The Marlborough College 13 Plus Pretest Assessment

Before Year 9 places can be offered, all candidates need to sit the ISEB Common Pretest Exam in Year 7. This exam is taken at the pupil’s current school and is designed to provide schools with an overview of a pupil’s academic potential. Covering four core subjects, English, Mathematics, Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning, the test is fully age-standardised to ensure that no candidate has an advantage over any other based on their age.

Marlborough College Admissions Criteria

The first step to gaining entry in Year 9 is for students to pass the ISEB Pretest in Year 7. Once the assessment is completed, the College will hold an Assessment Day comprising of two interviews: one with the Housemaster or Housemistress of the pupil’s preferred House and a second with a senior member of College staff.

Place allocations are based on a student’s performance in the pretest, the admissions interviews and the report from their current school. Provisional offers will be made towards the end of the summer term, 18 months prior to entry. Students will be placed on the A List (a firm place) or the B List (the waiting list). Parents of those on the A List must pay a deposit of £1,800 to secure the place.

Marlborough College also offers scholarships to pupils who excel in certain subjects.
