Dulwich College 13 Plus (13+) Pretest Practice Tests and (Courses)

Introduction

Founded in 1619, Dulwich College is an independent, academically selective school in Dulwich, London. It was established by Edward Alleyn, an Elizabethan actor, and is a member of both the Headmasters’ and Headmistresses’ Conference and the Eton Group. Dulwich College educates around 1,800 boys aged from 2 to 19 and many students go on to attend some of the most competitive universities in the UK and the world. The school aims to ensure that all students are engaged in learning in the classroom and beyond.

How to Apply for 13 Plus Entry to Dulwich College

Before applying for a Year 9 place at Dulwich College, parents and prospective students are encouraged to visit the campus during one of its Open Afternoons, where they’ll learn more about what the college has to offer. The Open Afternoons include a tour of the grounds and provide the opportunity to meet staff and current pupils. Individual visits to the school can also be arranged by contacting the registrar on 020 8299 9263.

Each year, Dulwich College admits around 75 boys into Year 9, with 20 places allocated to boys who sit the entrance examinations. Admission to the college is based on student performance in the appropriate exam, an interview with a member of staff and a report from the student’s current school.

The college aims to provide a friendly atmosphere for the interview, where candidates will be asked to demonstrate further evidence of their academic strengths, interests and abilities.

To apply for a Year 9 place at Dulwich College, parents should complete the registration form and return it to the school before the deadline date in October. For further advice on the admissions process, parents can contact the Registrar’s office on 020 8299 9263, or by email at [email protected].

Further information is also available on the Admissions pages of the college website and in the Information for Applicants document.

The Dulwich College 13 Plus Pretest Assessment

Students applying through academic selection are required to sit the ISEB Common Pretest in the Michaelmas term at their prep schools. This pretest is designed to provide the college with an indication of students’ academic potential.

The test is age-standardised to ensure that older boys don’t have an unfair advantage. The test can only be taken once in a 12-month period.

Candidates who are invited for interview following the pretest will be assessed further in English and Mathematics. The college states that approximately 90 boys are invited for interview.

Additional time is available for boys who have an Educational Psychologist’s report that shows they have below average scores for speed of cognitive processing.

How to Prepare for the Dulwich College Pretest

For some students, the ISEB Common Pretest will be their first experience of an exam environment. At Pretest Plus, we believe that a little preparation can go a long way to calming students’ nerves.

We recommend that parents help their child create a study timetable that covers the four core areas of the pretest: verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning, English and maths. In addition to working through a structured plan, it’s important that students also put theory into practice. One of the most effective ways of doing so is to use our online pretest practice tests and courses.

Practice tests and courses can help boost students’ confidence ahead of the pretest by familiarising them with the layout of the test and the types of questions they will be asked on the day.

After each test, parents can review their child’s answers and receive prompt feedback about each question in the form of detailed written explanations. Ranking statistics are also provided to give parents an indication of their child’s relative performance.

Our Pretest practice tests and courses are tried and tested. Tens of thousands of students have already used them to prepare successfully for the ISEB Common Pretest.
