Introduction
Surrounded by 200 acres of woodland in Surrey, Caterham School is a co-educational, independent school that was founded in 1811. There are almost 900 pupils in the senior school at Caterham and it offers a range of extra-curricular activity, including sport and music.
The school aims to bring together more traditional learning methods with exciting opportunities around innovative technology.
How to Apply for 13 Plus Entry to Caterham School
At Caterham School, parents are given two routes of admission at 13 Plus: ‘Deferred Entry’, for pupils in Year 6 and ‘Standard Entry’, for pupils in Year 8. If you would like to know in advance where your child will attend senior school, you are advised to consider the Deferred Entry option.
Registering is done online and includes a non-refundable registration fee of £100 per child. You must also send copies of your child’s recent school report, their birth certificate and their passport to the Admissions Department when registering.
For Standard 13 Plus Entry, parents or guardians should submit the appropriate registration form, alongside the fee and documents mentioned above. These applications must be received early in October of Year 8.
Successful applicants will be asked to attend an admissions interview, usually during term-time in November. The purpose of the interview is to establish if your child is suited to the school. Prospective pupils will also be given the opportunity to ask members of staff questions.
Caterham School 13 Plus Pretest Assessment
Deferred entry candidates are required to sit the ISEB Common Pretest Exam if they are to secure a place at Caterham. These exams take place in the Autumn term of Year 6 and give students the opportunity to showcase their ability in English, Mathematics, Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning. Taken online and under a time limit, the ISEB pretest is designed to show the potential of students and all candidates sitting the examinations are considered for an academic scholarship.
Caterham School Admissions Criteria
Prospective students are required to pass either the ISEB exam or the 13 Plus Co-Curricular Scholarship Assessment to gain a place at Caterham. The school also requires a reference from your child’s current school.
Place allocation is based on the student’s performance in the pretest and their interview with staff members. The reference from the pupil’s current school may also be taken into account when making a final decision.
Offer letters are sent via post in early December and parents have until early February to decide whether or not their child will be attending Caterham. If parents accept a conditional offer, they must secure a place by paying deposit of £750, refunded when the child leaves the school.
