How to Apply for 13 Plus Entry to Bryanston School

Parents and students are invited to make an initial visit to the school before registration, preferably two or three years before entry. The tours tend to be in small groups of up to 12 families, on Tuesday or Friday mornings. Registered children have a second opportunity to make an individual family visit before Activities Day in the autumn term of Year 7. To book a tour, parents can contact the Admissions Registrar on 01258 484633, or complete an enquiry form online.

The Bryanston School 13 Plus Pretest Assessment

In the autumn of Year 7, all registered children are invited to sit the ISEB Common Pretest. This test is completed online. Its aim is to provide schools with an overview of the student’s academic potential over several core subjects: English, Maths, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning.

The test is age-standardised to ensure that no students are disadvantaged due tp their age.

Bryanston School Admissions Criteria

Bryanston School recognises that children often develop at different rates, so the result of the ISEB Pretest is just one of the factors that are taken into consideration as part of the school’s assessment process. A child who is not successful in Year 7 is placed on the Development List, and Bryanston then liaises with the child’s current school in the hope that a place can be offered on the Main List at a later date. In making this decision, a great deal of weight is given to the child’s references.

All candidates are subsequently interviewed by either the Headmaster, or the Director of Admissions. During the interview, conversation will cover the child’s academic interests, hobbies and other activities. The intention is to get to know the child better and match them with an appropriate tutor.

Students must also sit either the Scholarship Exam, the school’s own Entrance Exam, or the Common Entrance Exam.

All children who have prepared for Common Entrance are expected to sit that exam. Those who have not, must instead sit the school’s own Entrance Exam, which focuses on English, Maths, Science and a Modern Foreign Language. This exam takes place in February of the year of entry. Students sitting the Common Entrance Exam must achieve a minimum of 50% in all of their subjects in the summer term before entry. In Year 9, there are approximately 80 places for boys and around 55 places for girls.

Should a place on the Main List be offered, a deposit of £1,000 is required to secure it. Bryanston also offers scholarships at 13 Plus, which can cover up to 25% of the fees. Bursaries meanwhile, are means-tested, and can stand alone or supplement scholarships.
