Introduction
Badminton School is an independent girls’ day and boarding school in Westbury-on-Trym in Bristol. The school educates girls aged between 3 and 18 years consistently performs well in national school league tables at A Level. Badminton School offers a holistic education through challenging yet fun learning. The school has a strong emphasis on skills development to support independent learning.
Badminton School Admissions Criteria
Badminton School operates a selective admission process in order to identify girls whose academic abilities and other interests match the ethos of the school. In the first instance, the school’s admissions policy recommends that parents should request a prospectus from the school and arrange a visit.
A registration form is then completed and students take the relevant entrance assessments. Candidates are then invited to a Taster Day to experience school life. Students’ current schools are then contacted for references and places are offered.
In cases of a ‘tie-break’ between two candidates, place allocation is determined using the school’s oversubscription criteria. These factors are not ranked in priority but are rather considered based on whether the application is for day or boarding:
– Girls with a sister already at the school
– Girls who have a close relative who used to attend the school
– Girls with particular talents and aptitudes
– Girls who have visited the school
– Girls who chose Badminton as their first school
– Girls who registered for a place first

How to Apply for Entry to Badminton School
Before applying for a place at Badminton School, parents and students are invited to attend one of the school’s Open Events. All Year 8 girls are invited to the school’s Discovery Day, which takes place in January and includes a range of activities. Parents are then welcome to join in the evening for presentations and to meet staff members.
In order to apply for a place at Badminton School, parents are required to complete an online registration form for the relevant year of entry and pay a £50 registration fee.
The Badminton School Cognitive Abilities Test (CAT4)
Entry to Badminton School is determined by each girl’s performance in a Cognitive Abilities Test (CAT4). For Year 7 and Year 8 entry, girls are required to take entrance examinations in English, Maths and a Cognitive Abilities Test. Following the entrance exam, girls will also have an interview with a senior member of staff.
For entry to years 9 and 10, entrance exams take place in November. Tests are taken in English and Maths as well as a Cognitive Abilities Test. Interviews are also arranged with a senior member of staff.
Final decisions on place allocation are made at the discretion of the Headteacher. Exam results are sent by post and by email to parents and offer letters are sent two weeks after the assessments.
