The Cognitive Abilities Test (CAT4) in Qatar: How it’s Used and How to Prepare

Introduction

The Cognitive Abilities Test (CAT4) is used in over 100 countries worldwide, including Qatar. Cognitive Abilities Tests are generally used to assess a pupil’s academic potential. The CAT aims to showcase a child’s overall abilities, rather than test the knowledge they’ve acquired up to that point. The CAT is an annual assessment that is gaining greater traction across the globe as an effective measurement of a student’s abilities.

As well as assessing a student’s potential, the Cognitive Abilities Test can also help schools to identify students who have additional support needs.

CATs generally assess pupils in four areas: verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning and spatial reasoning.

The Cognitive Abilities Test (CAT4) in Qatar

The education system in Qatar is jointly controlled by the Supreme Education Council (SEC) and the Ministry of Education (MOE). The SEC is responsible for overseeing independent schools, whereas the MOE is responsible for providing support to private schools. Primary schooling is obligatory for every child and is free in public schools.

In 2001, SEC launched the Education for a New Era (EFNE) initiative and introduced nationwide policy reforms. Since then, Qatar has continued to make education an integral part of the country’s National Development Strategy and introduced standardised national student tests aligned with internationally-benchmarked curriculum standards. As a result, a selection of private and independent schools in Qatar currently use the CAT in order to provide standardised testing across each age group.

Qatar schools that use the Cognitive Abilities Test are better able to identify each student’s potential, rather than focusing purely on ranking students. The CAT can identify barriers to learning, allowing teachers to alter their teaching strategies to provide pupils with the best learning opportunities.

Our CAT4 Practice Test Resources

At Pretest Plus, we specialise in publishing online practice tests and courses that help students prepare for the CAT, UK school pretests and UKISET examinations. Our experience has shown us that students who have the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the format of the CAT4 have a competitive advantage over their peers.

Our selection of CAT4 practice tests and courses contain different questions to allow students to get plenty of practice ahead of test day. The tests will familiarise students with the layout and the types of questions that they may be asked. Each test covers the essential elements of the Cognitive Abilities Test: verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning and spatial reasoning.

The first practice CAT test is the best place for students to start as it will give a good idea of their current attainment level. With a clear revision plan, students can then progress onto the remaining tests. All of our practice tests and courses include detailed answers and rankings statistics.
