Heckmondwike Grammar School (HGS) • Late Transfer (In-Year 12+ and 13+) Entry Information

Introduction

Heckmondwike Grammar School (HGS) is a co-ed grammar school in Heckmondwike, West Yorkshire. Operational since 1898, it currently caters for approximately 1,470 pupils and is regularly featured among the best state schools in the country. [1]

HGS’ curriculum is both broad and varied, introducing pupils to a range of relevant academic and non-academic disciplines, including science, art, French, humanities and Latin. Exploration of one’s intellectual capacity is strongly encouraged, hence the syllabus is delivered in a manner that stimulates independent thought and in-class inquisitiveness.

Self discovery extends well beyond the classroom thanks to the rich extracurricular programme featuring choir, guitar group, tennis, Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, Esports and many other pursuits. Consequently, students maximise their resourcefulness, social skills and cognition, proceeding onto further education with all-round personalities. [2]

In line with the motto Nil Sine Labore (Nothing without work), HGS recognises and acknowledges effort, placing high expectations at the centre of its philosophy. The school’s community is vibrant and culturally diverse, boasting a strong sense of togetherness that underpins its many successes.

Heckmondwike Grammar School (HGS) In-Year Entry (12 Plus & 13 Plus) Admissions Information

The Heckmondwike Grammar standard entry point is 11 Plus. However, the school also accepts applications from pupils interested in In-Year (Late) Entry. To assess pupils for late transfer, Heckmondwike Grammar administers the CEM Select online test.

CEM Select is created by the Centre of Evaluation and Monitoring (CEM), which is part of Cambridge Assessment.

Please note that vacancies in Years 8 and 9 are quite rare and very limited. Hence, if more students pass the exam than there are places available, priority will be given to:

  • Children who are in public care or have previously been in public care;
  • Children who are entitled to Pupil Premium;
  • Children who live in the catchment area;
  • Children whose siblings attend the school, etc.
