Introduction
Founded in 1553, Bromsgrove School is an independent, co-educational boarding school in Bromsgrove. It’s one of the oldest public schools in the UK and offers both boarding and day places.
The school educates around 1,660 pupils, aged from 2 to 18. The campus is spread over 100 acres with the main facilities located in the centre of Bromsgrove. The school also has an international presence, with boarding schools in Bangkok and China.

Bromsgrove School 13 Plus Admissions Criteria
At Bromsgrove school, all candidates are required to take the school’s entrance examination, which consists of a Cognitive Abilities Test (CAT). Parents are required to complete the appropriate application form for Year 9 entry, which can be found in the school’s Admissions Information Booklet.

How to Apply for 13 Plus Entry to Bromsgrove School
Before applying for a Year 9 place at Bromsgrove School, parents and prospective students are encouraged to visit the school by attending one of its Open Mornings. The events are held throughout the year and provide the opportunity to meet staff and tour the campus.

In order to apply for 13 Plus entry to Bromsgrove School, parents need to download and complete the PDF Registration Form. A registration fee of £100 (day place), or £200 (for boarders) also needs to be paid at the time of registering.
When accepting a place at the school, parents are also asked to pay an acceptance fee.
The Bromsgrove School Cognitive Abilities Test (CAT4)
Bromsgrove School aims to provide every student with the opportunity to realise their full potential. In order to gain a better understanding of students’ capabilities, the school administers Cognitive Abilities Tests (CATs) at 13 Plus level, as part of its entrance examination.
The results of these tests are used to determine if a student will benefit from an education at Bromsgrove School and what additional support may be required.
The Cognitive Abilities Tests assess a student’s ability to think across four different reasoning batteries:
– Verbal Reasoning – the ability to express ideas and reason through words.
– Non-verbal Reasoning – problem-solving using pictures and diagrams.
– Spatial Reasoning – the capacity to think and draw conclusions in spatial dimensions.
– Quantitative Reasoning – the ability to use numerical skills to solve problems.
Testing will be carried out online, using laptops. There will also be a creative writing exercise, based on current affairs, which will be paper-based.
After the tests are completed, scores are presented in a standardised form and benchmarked against national performance using a base of 250,000 pupils.
